We truly believe that every child can succeed in mathematics.

At Gossops Green, we want every child to fully understand the maths that they will use every day of their lives – telling the time, using money, measuring weight, length and capacity, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing – the list goes on. Maths is such an integral part of all of our lives and we use many ideas and tools to ensure that the concepts are within reach of all. 

Our Curriculum

Our basic maths curriculum is based on the White Rose scheme and adopts their aim of developing a “new culture of deep understanding, confidence and competence in maths”. Our children are exposed to key concepts in different ways to allow them to develop their understanding and challenge their thinking. We use the ‘Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract’ approach in our maths lessons. Children explore concepts and ideas using a variety of concrete equipment including Numicon, diennes and place value counters, before moving onto pictorial representations of the maths and finally, completing abstract calculations, either mentally or using formal written methods. Gossops Green Maths Challenge

Children benefit hugely from knowing basic number facts including their number bonds to 10 and 20 (e.g. 6 + 4 = 10) and their times tables.  To encourage fast, accurate recall, all children regularly attempt the ‘Gossops Green Maths Challenge’ – a set of Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum timed challenges, based on Big Maths Challenges, for each year of their school career. Children who complete their challenge with the allocated time receive a sticker or certificate and their name is proudly displayed on one of our Maths Challenge boards. Look for the names on a coloured background – these children have completed the challenge from a year, or two, above their current academic year. The Maths Challenge has proved so successful that a Diamond Level is currently being developed!


We want our children to be confident with the following: 

Reception – Number bonds to 10

Year 1 – Number bonds to 20

Year 2 – 2x, 5x and 10x tables

Year 3 – 3x, 4x, 8x tables

Year 4 – All tables up to 12 x 12

Times Tables Rockstars

To support this, we also use Times Tables Rockstars from Year 2 upwards. All children have their own unique log in which means that they can go online and play times tables games in a safe and secure online platform. Children have an avatar and an online name to ensure that children are safe online. Our year 6 pupils in particular get very competitive, especially when they challenge the teachers!
